I only need to use one single tool [Omnis Studio] for creating different solutions - stand-alone, client-server, html-based systems, web-services and web client-based systems... ...This saves a lot of time and effort for me, allowing me to concentrate on developing the concepts, strategies and total solutions.
Sten-Erik Björling of Enviro Data, Sweden

Enviro Data of Sweden has for several years worked on international projects centred on solutions for distance learning and competence management. Their current projects cover the creation of a global competence network for the hydropower sector, and the development of solutions to disseminate the results from advanced environmental research projects in the Barents Region, an area of North West Russia and the northern parts of Sweden, Norway and Finland. Both these projects use an IT-platform created by Enviro Data, using the Omnis web client, that will contain new types of solutions in areas like distance learning, handling of best practices and recommendations, and the management of distributed research projects.

A recent project was MyEcoCost, a system to measure the resource efficiency of products, services and technologies. The web and mobile based system provided a means of accounting for and expressing usage of natural resources for products, services and technologies, to inform all economic actors on environmentally relevant information with dynamically calculated, near real time figures.

Such IT-platforms demand high flexibility, the ability to handle large numbers of users, large databases, low demands on communication links, high security and very advanced interfaces and internal structures. The systems will be used in contexts involving some of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in the environmental sector and the systems must allow for the future use of new media, information types and usage patterns and concepts.

The reasoning behind the choice of Omnis web client technology as a platform for this work was based on the following points:

  • Ability to support usage of very advanced interfaces on the client computers.
  • Properly developed, the systems will generate relatively small loads on servers and communication links.
  • The solutions support a large number of platforms for clients, servers and databases.
  • The solutions can be load balanced for handling of large installations and allow for the creation of distributed systems.
  • High level of security, not only regarding the data but also for many media resources managed by the system.

"The combination of Omnis Studio and the Omnis web client allows me to handle not only the issues coming up in programming the solutions, it also allows me to both participate and develop concepts and strategies in the solutions," said Sten-Erik Björling of Enviro Data. "With any other tool I would have been locked into the role of being just a programmer and not a solution developer due to the need to use several different tools to achieve the same results as I do today on my own. Another big advantage is that I only need to use one single tool for creating different solutions - stand-alone, client-server, html-based systems, web-services and web client-based systems. All of these can use the same logic and data handling routines on the server. This saves a lot of time and effort for me, allowing me to concentrate on developing the concepts, strategies and total solutions. And I can read and understand my code even after 5 years of programming."
